Bhubaneswar: In a bid to loot a branch of State Bank of India (SBI) at Balianta locality on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar a thief was foiled by some alert locals, Tuesday afternoon.
The thief tried to rob the bank branch by flashing a toy gun at the employees. The incident took place during closing hours.
According to an eyewitness, the looter sat inside the branch for quite a long time. He observed movements of customers and employees before committing the crime. Later, the man pulled out toy gun and demanded cash from staff who were closing the branch.
The miscreant grabbed cash of Rs 8.32 lakh, gold ornaments and ran out of the SBI branch, the eyewitness added.

Miscreant was identified as Shankar Parida from the same locality. He attacked two of the four bank employees and ran away with cash and other valuables, an official in Balianta police station said.
Meanwhile, some alert locals chased the looter and nabbed him in a nearby farmland. They also recovered the looted cash including gold ornaments from his possession.
The locals handed over Shankar to Balianta police.
