Bhubaneswar: Sahid Nagar police arrested Sunday, B Tech student Rajesh Parida in connection with the stealing of a courier company’s packet containing 30 mobile phones. The accused was produced in court Monday and remanded to police custody.
The accused Rajesh, 23, a resident of Korkana village in Bhadrak district, made the cops’ job easier when he started using some of the stolen phones. Police have seized all the phones, from his possession. The value of the seized phones is more than Rs 15 lakh.
Police sources said, the courier company located at Sahid Nagar usually sends the parcels to different destinations by buses. The organisation had sent a parcel containing 30 mobile phones by a bus January 12. Rajesh, a student of a private engineering college was also going home by the same bus.
At the Vani Vihar bus stop, Ashutosh Dash, an employee of the company, had loaded the packet in the bus and informed the driver.
After hearing the conversation between the driver and Ashutosh, Rajesh hatched a plan to steal the phones. When the bus reached Bhadrak, he decamped with the packet taking advantage of the driver and conductor’s absent-mindedness.
When the packet did not reach its destination, the courier company started enquiring. Ashutosh finally lodged a police complaint, January 18.
The police launched their own investigation and started tracking the IMI numbers of the stolen phones. They managed to locate three of the phones operating from Bhadrak. They conducted a raid Sunday and nabbed nabbed Rajesh.
A case under section 379 of IPC has been registered against Rajesh.
