Kolkata: Former Union Minister Babul Supriyo has recently left the BJP and joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC). However, even after changing colours, Babul Supriyo has refrained from criticising the top BJP leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The singer-turned-politician has been close to the BJP leadership for seven years, before he was suddenly relieved of his ministry earlier this year.
The Parliament member from Asansol constituency in West Bengal was recently in New Delhi. He returned here Wednesday and launched a scathing attack on Modi. “It seems that in the last seven years Modiji (Narendra Modi) has not really been able to trust the Bengalis,” Babul told reporters at the Howrah Station. “Otherwise how would you clarify as to why a single BJP MP from West Bengal has not been given the role of a Cabinen Minister… It has always been a ‘Minister of State’. It goes to show that the PM cannot rely on Bengalis which shouldn’t have been the case. I will certainly say that to some extent there is some inequality towards BJP MPs elected from West Bengal,” Babul added.
Initially after being asked to resign from his position as the Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Babul had stated that he would continue to serve the people. He also had stated that he would continue to be a part of the BJP.
However, in a dramatic turn of events last week, Babul shifted allegiance to the TMC stating that he can only serve the people under ‘Didi’ (Mamata Banerjee). However, even then he had stayed away from making any comments against the likes of Modi and Shah. He had only criticised some of the state-level BJP leaders. However, it seems now that there is no love lost between the BJP and Babul.
