Sundergarh: The Odisha Forest department Friday recovered the carcass of an elephant calf from a pond near Khajurbahal village in Doghara section under Hemagiri forest range in Sundergarh district.

The real reason for the death of the two-month-old male calf is yet to be ascertained. However, officials in the department suspected that the baby elephant might have got trapped in the slushy mud in the pond in which it had come to have a drink.

Some locals spotted the carcass of the baby elephant and then informed the forest officials regarding the same.

Locals said, a herd of 15 elephants have been seen near Khajurbahal village for several times in the recent past. They said that there were three calves in the herd, one of which was surviving on mother’s milk. The villagers also appeared clueless as to how the calf died.

The carcass was later buried after the forest department officials conducted a post-mortem of the body.
