Baby girl thrown into fire by mother dies, woman detained

Bhubaneswar: The six month-old girl, who was thrown into fire by her mother, succumbed during treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital Cuttack Friday morning. Police have detained the accused mother.

The harrowing incident occurred Wednesday evening when the accused, Suna Pingua, had thrown her infant into fire reportedly in a fit of rage.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused was the second wife of Manguli. The couple lived in Salia Sahi slums of the city. The couple reportedly had strained relations.

Wednesday morning they had an argument over some issue, after which Manguli went out of the house. In a fit of rage Suna set her husband’s clothes on fire. Not satisfied with this, she picked up the baby playing on the ground and threw her as well into the fire.

On hearing the screams of the baby, neighbours rushed to her rescue and rushed the critically injured baby to capital hospital, from where she was referred to SCM Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.

Nayapalli police have detained the accused. Besides, taking suo moto cognizance of the incident the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has lodged a complaint against the accused with Nayapalli police, who are investigating further.
