Bandh called by BJP hits normal life in Hirakud

Sambalpur: Movement of vehicles has been affected following BJP’s call for a 12-hour bandh, protesting against the death of a local youth in an accident in Hirakud Tuesday night.

Commuters in the Hirakud Municipality area had a tough time as bus services were cancelled in view of the bandh.

Two back-to-back road accidents — in which two youths were killed — triggered widespread resentment in Hirakud area Tuesday.

Locals staged a road blockade with the dead body of the deceased Arun Yadav after he was mowed down by a Hyva used for garbage collection.

The situation deteriorated further when another youth was killed after being hit by a vehicle from the Hindalco Company at 8 pm.

The BJP’s demand includes the setting up of a proper waste management system and suitable compensation to accident victims.

Schools, colleges and other educational institutions remained closed while shops and business establishments also downed the shutters.
