Bargarh: Continuing its tirade against MoS (Home) Dibya Shankar Mishra for his alleged complicity in the lady teacher Mamita Meher murder case, BJP’s Bargarh district unit Monday observed an eight-hour bandh in the region demanding a CBI probe into the case.
The party leaders also demanded the arrest of the accused police personnel, dismissal of Minister Mishra from the state government and financial assistance to the breaved family by the state government. The bandh was peaceful but disrupted normal life in the area. BJP workers were seen picketing and closing down the government offices in the district.
This apart, the party workers also slammed the state government and the police for the delay in taking noticeable action against the culprits involved in the custodial death of a local youth named Gobinda Kumbhar last month.
The shutdown observed till 2 pm severely disrupted normal life with markets, shops, business establishments and government and non-government institutions, educational institutions remaining closed across the district. Roads wore a deserted look as people remained at home and vehicles did not ply.
The agitating BJP members led by their district president Aswini Sarangi also picketed at several key locations of Bargarh Town and blocked the national highway affecting vehicular movement to and from the town. The party workers demanded CBI probe into the sensitive cases of Gobind Kumbhar and Mamita Meher and lambasted the state government for non-action.
They have also been protesting the custodial death of Gobinda for the last one month. He was allegedly beaten to death by the police personnel but the district administration and the state government are silent on the issue and are yet to take any action against the accused cops, said a BJP leader who was picketing at Gandhi Chhak in Bargarh town. The party workers joined by their women counterparts burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and MoS (Home) Dibya Shankar Mishra.
They warned of intensifying their protest if the state government did not heed to their demand for a CBI probe.
Zilla Parishad chairperson Mukta Sahu, vice-chairperson Madan Deep, former district president Arupananda Sahu, Subrat Hota, district Yuva Morcha president Amit Panda, Praveen Panigrahi and a host of party leaders participated during the bandh.
