Bargarh LS MP seeks info on tackling plagiarism

New Delhi: Bargarh Lok Sabha MP Prabhas Kumar Singh (BJD) Monday sought information from the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry regarding steps taken to curb plagiarism and use of intellectual properties of
others.
Singh raised the issue through a supplementary question during the Question Hour in the Lower House. He said, “Is the government aware of the fact that a large number of articles being published in the ISSN and ISBN journals are duplicate in nature? A lot of plagiarism is going on and writers and scholars, just to get a job in the universities or colleges, are publishing articles overnight without conducting any research in the fields.”
“If this is true, what steps had been taken by the government to mitigate and control this kind of a situation in the country?” he added.
In his reply, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said, “We are asking all the universities to review their recommendations about the journals to be recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC) for promotion and accreditation. Those recommendations should be reviewed by the universities by August 30. By that time, they should review and give us the final recommendations as to which are genuine journals. We do not want any predatory journals to exist.”
He also said that all the universities had been mandated to scan each PhD thesis submitted through a software whereby plagiarism gets exposed. He also talked about the revised norms for promotion and said that college teachers should not be burdened for researches.
