New Delhi: Former India skipper and legendary left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi is of the opinion that Mahendra Singh Dhoni on the field is ‘half a captain’ for the team for the contribution he makes both behind and in front of the stumps as well providing crucial inputs to Virat Kohli. The spinner was talking to reporters at a reception programme organised for the Australian cricket team here, Monday evening.
“Frankly speaking, I really do not understand why Dhoni has been rested for the last two ODIs. The team need him,” Bedi stated. “His presence was felt during the fourth ODI against Australia. The Indian team felt his absence with the bat, gloves as well as his inputs. He is almost half a captain,” Bedi stated.
The 72-year-old former spin great who took 266 wickets in 67 Tests also stated that Dhoni has a calming effect on the side as well as on Kohli. He also asserted that the selectors and the BCCI are needlessly experimenting with the team ahead of the World Cup.
“This experimenting has been going on for the last one year. I would rather advise the team and the BCCI to live in present,” Bedi stated.
“The World Cup is still more than two months away. So let us not think too far ahead. I think we should concentrate on winning the series against Australia rather than planning for the World Cup,” Bedi added.
