They say marriages are made in heaven. So was the case Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza found love in former Pakistan cricket skipper Shoaib Malik.
However, one would be shocked to know that Shaoib wasn’t the man Sania had chosen initially. It was her childhood friend, Sohrab Mirza with whom Sania was engaged before tying the knot with cricketer Shoaib.
The marriage was in the offing, but unfortunately that didn’t work and they had to part ways eventually. Sohrab once explained in an interview how the marriage didn’t take place despite having almost making it to the aisle.
“It was a mutual decision to get engaged and we mutually decided to part ways even though it hurts. But, you have to move on,” Sohrab had said.
The reason for parting ways was also spelled out by the businessman.
“Differences between us cropped up right from the word go. After the engagement, we realised we were completely incompatible although we had known each other for around six years and our families have been friends for three generations. The broken engagement didn’t come out of the blue. I saw it coming!”
As far as Sania’s celebrity status is concerned, Sohrab didn’t mince his words in clarifying that part too. “She was a celebrity for the world, but for me she was a simple girl. She has worked so hard to achieve what she has and I’m proud of her achievements. But, I also run a decent business, so there was no competition between us.”
If sources are anything to go by, Sohrab’s family apparently wanted Saina to quit tennis post marriage. This demand was turned down by Sania’s father Imran Mirza as they never wanted to cut short Sania’s career at any cost. Hence the marriage never took place despite being engaged.
