Bengal driver gets severed hand reattached in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Doctors in the city performed a rare surgery successfully by reattaching the severed hand of a 24-year-old West Bengal driver who met with a road mishap here recently.

The team of doctors who operated upon him claimed that this was a rare surgery with a very low success rate.

“This was a very rare case as the patient arrived after the golden hour (6 hours-8 hours) and his amputated forearm was also not preserved well. Studies say that under such circumstances, the success rate is close to 3 per cent. However we were able to conduct the surgery successfully,” said Dr Akshaya Rout senior Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery who conducted the surgery.

Rout was joined by orthopedic surgeon Dr Gayadhar Behera. The team is now planning to publish the rare surgery in reputed national and international journals. The team said that the patient is now doing well and the x-ray reports suggest a good improvement.

“Within 6-8 weeks, we will get a better picture of unison of the bones. If required, we will conduct another surgery for better cohesion of the broken bones after four months in such cases,” Dr Behera said. The surgery was done by the medical team at Kalinga Hospital here.

Meanwhile, the patient thanked the doctors for preventing the lifelong trauma he would have faced in case of amputation.
