Chhatrapur: Sports infrastructure is getting a big push in Ganjam district as the government plans to renovate and expand the Berhampur Stadium and to construct an Integrated Sports Complex (ISC) at Aruapalli, a report said Saturday.

“Work on an indoor hall at Hinjili costing Rs 8 crore has been completed while work on another indoor hall in Chhatrapur costing Rs 3 crore is almost complete,” district sports officer Prasant Kumar Sahu told the media Saturday.

As per the plan, the Berhampur Stadium will be renovated and a beautification drive will be undertaken at an expenditure of Rs 32 crore. The renovation and expansion of the Berhampur Stadium is a dream come true for the residents of Berhampur and Ganjam district.

A few years back, the plan to renovate the stadium was limited to paper, but it got a boost after the stadium authorities took possession of the NCC quarters near it. This will help in its expansion, beautification and development, Sahu added.

Reports said that renovation of the stadium will be carried out over a 15- acre plot and a tender has been floated for that. The renovated stadium will have a cricket field, a swimming pool, multi-purpose hall, two tennis courts, two courts for basketball and volleyball each and a large parking slot.

An Integrated Sports Complex (ISC) will also come up on 16 acres at Aruapalli at an expenditure of Rs 43 crore. The land has been identified and preparation of a detailed project report is underway, Sahu said.

This ISC will have a synthetic athletic track, multi-purpose indoor hall, aquatic complex, basketball and volleyball courts, a 150-bed sports hostel and a four-wheeler parking slot, he added.
