Bhadrak murder accused turns hostile in court

Bhadrak: Dhamnagar police produced Gopinath Mohanty, alias Babua, the accused in the sensational Bhadrak double murder and rape case, in ADJ Court (special court to deal with cases under POCSO Act) Friday.

Babua, who had admitted to all his guilt before police on the day of his arrest, made a U-turn and did not admit his guilt in the court. He said he would contest his case. Now, police have put the recorded statement of Babua before the public and the media.

Meanwhile, the court has asked the police to garner solid evidence against the accused in the double murder and rape case and furnish them in the court within four months.

It has been clear that the accused may get out of jail after four months if the police fail to collect adequate evidence and produce chargesheet in court within the slated time. As no lawyer came forward to argue the case of Babua, lawyer Harihar Dhal has been appointed as State Defence Counsel to fight the case on his behalf.

Meanwhile, Babua’s wife Rashmita Mohanty met him for about half an hour in the court waiting room. It was also said that Babua was not seen talking to any other inmates in his cell. The accused had Thursday blamed his wife for his arrest.

Police Friday handed over Rs 60,000 in cash to Sekharchandra Behuria, the only son of the deceased Rabindra Behuria and Bhaktilata Behuria. Police had recovered the cash from the almirah of the deceased the day after the gruesome killings. Rabindra had received Rs 2.60 lakh from the in-laws of his elder daughter who had been murdered. The money was meant for rehabilitation of Rabindra’s granddaughter.
