Padmapur: A woman was allegedly gangraped and later murdered after she failed to pay the house rent at Majhi Sahi village under Eram panchayat of Basudevpur police limits in Bhadrak district, police said Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Mamata Mallik (25), wife of a fisherman Ramakant Mallik and native of Adhuan village under Basudevpur police limits in the district. She was staying along with her husband and two children at the house of Bhagirathi Majhi in Majhi Sahi village.
The house owner Bhagirathi and his associates allegedly gangraped her and later killed her after she failed to pay the house rent. The matter came to the fore after the deceased’s mother Jhulani Mallik lodged a complaint at the Basudevpur police station, Thursday.
On being informed, Basudevpur IIC Sabitri Panda and other police officials rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. A scientific team was also pressed into service.
Jhulani has alleged in her complaint that her son-in-law Ramakant being a fisherman often used to leave her family back at home and leave for the sea to catch fish. Bhagirathi used to hurl abuses at Mamata and had even assaulted her on many occasions when the family had failed to pay the house rent.
Jhulani discovered her daughter dead Thursday when she visited the rented house at Majhi Sahi village. She found Mamata lying dead inside the house with injury marks all over her body and alleged that her daughter was gangraped before being killed.
