‘Bhubaneswar is like Karachi’

post news network

Bhubaneswar, Dec 11: Smile came back finally on the face of Pakistan coach Shahnaz Sheikh as his team beat the Netherlands 4-2 Thursday, after a winless streak in pool matches. One of the best hockey players of the world in his time, Shanaz talked with Orissa Post about the win, his team’s plan and his hopes. Excerpts:

On the win

This win was very necessary for our side as we have not played much matches in last 18 months. It will boost the morale of our players and may help in reviving hockey in Pakistan.

Hockey in Pakistan

Hockey is dying in Pakistan because of the absence of funds. It is high time for organising India-Pakistan matches as it will help in reviving hockey in Pakistan by bringing sponsors and motivating youngsters to play the game.

Strategy for semis

Our tournament just started. In earlier games, we did many experiments with the side, which didn’t work. But, now we have found the perfect combination. And I also have a secret strategy which I won’t reveal now (smiles).

Format of the tournament

The format has helped Pakistan. We have played and won the quarterfinal after losing all pool matches. But personally I don’t like it very much. It is punishing for the team which performs well in the pools games. There must be some reward for the teams that finish at the top two positions in the pool.

About Bhubaneswar

I like the city. People are very nice and there are so many hockey fans. It is a perfect place for hockey and the climate here is just like Karachi.
