Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police Thursday arrested Soumyajit Mahapatra–alleged boyfriend of deceased software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari–from his residence in Sambalpur.
Police arrested Soumyajit in connection with Sweta’s death after five months after the latter’s alleged suicide.
A police team from Chandrasekharpur Police Station in Bhubaneswar reached Bareipali police station in Sambalpur at around 4am Thursday, a source said.
Subsequently, the team along with Sambalpur police proceeded to Soumyajit’s house at Bansidhar Nagar in the town and nabbed him on the charge of abetment to suicide around 4.30 am today.
As per the source, Soumyajit will be taken to Bhubaneswar after some formalities at Bareipali Police Station in Sambalpur.
Notably, police arrested Soumyajit after his anticipatory bail application was rejected by Orissa High Court.
It can be mentioned here that Sweta was a resident of Bhadrak district. She worked for a software major in Bhubaneswar and was staying in Infocity area here.
Sweta’s family members could not contact her August 9, 2022 on her mobile phone despite repeated attempts. Later, they sought the help of Chandrasekharpur police here.
Afterwards, police visited her apartment and found the door was locked from inside. After breaking the door, police found her body hanging from a ceiling fan.
Initially, police termed Sweta’s death as a suicide but her family members accused Soumyajit of blackmailing and murdering Sweta.
