Bhutan officials visit wealth centre

Bhubaneswar: A team of officials, representing Government of Bhutan recently visited Basuaghai Wealth Centre here, managed by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). The six-member high-level delegation from Bhutan attended the orientation by Odisha Urban Academy. Later, the team visited the wealth centre and different facilities such as Micro Composting Centre (MCC) and Material Recovery Facility (MRF).

Team spirit, coordination among the workforce, use of personal protective equipment, waste collection and dedicated engagement of local community members to carry forward the decentralised waste management process were among the key issues discussed in the orientation programme. “A community-driven initiative, decentralised waste management model is currently adopted for waste management. Such practices enhance community cooperation for better city sanitation, thereby promoting sustainability,” said BMC commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil. The delegation appreciated BMC’s effort in engaging communities, the concept of Swachha Sathi and e-waste management which reflects exemplary initiatives and provides learning opportunities for ULBs.

“Engaging marginalised communities in managing sanitation of the City is an example of inclusive waste management practice,” said the team members. The team was accompanied by the BMC assistant commissioner N Ganesh Babu, who briefed details of the centre and management process.
