Bike-lifters’ gang busted, 46 motorcycles seized

One of the accused, Sashi, was in lawyer’s uniform while lifting bikes from court premises

Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police Thursday busted a bike-lifting gang and arrested four persons apart from recovering 46 stolen motorcycles from their possession.

The accused were identified as Sashi Bhusan Dash alias Narayan of Baradikilo village under Nimapara police limits in Puri, Ajaya Kumar Swain of Badalakalamati under Balipatana police limits in Khurda, Lokanath Behera alias Luku of Kamalapatna under Nuagaon police limits and Kahnu Charan Sahu alias Kahna of Chudamalli Sahi village under Saranakula police limits in Nayagarh.

Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty Thursday handed over 14 bikes to their rightful owners at a special event at Badagada police station. The accused were stealing motor cycles from the premises of Bhubaneswar court, tehsil office, sub-registrar’s office, Mausima Temple and Capital Hospital under Bhubaneswar Urban Police Division (UPD). They were also involved in stealing bikes in Niali area and Cuttack UPD.

The police got the breakthrough following a case lodged by one Suryakanta Panda of Delang area in Puri who had come to the Bhubaneswar court August 8. Police registered a case (231/18) under section 379 of the IPC and began a probe. A special team was formed under the leadership of Dilip Swain, IIC of Badagada police station to nab the culprits.

The entire act of Sashi lifting a bike from the court premises was captured in the CCTV camera. He was in a lawyer’s uniform while committing the crime. Similar footages were found from the CCTV cameras installed at the premises of tehsil and sub-registrar’s offices.

Police arrested Kahnu Sahu following the arrest of Shasi from Nayagarh. Both of them used to arrive at the court on a bike which contained the uniforms. Police also nabbed two associates of Kahnu and recovered some bikes from them.

They used to sell stolen bikes to relatives and close friends.
