Birsa Munda statue vandalism case: Tension brews in Mayurbhnaj

Thakumunda: Tension continues to brew in Thakurmunda block in Mayurbhanj district after a statue of tribal leader Birsa Munda was vandalized a few days ago.

According to a source, Indian tribal freedom fighter and folk hero Birsa Munda’s statue was installed at Dhipa Sahi of Kendujiani panchayat under Thakurmunda block three years ago. Since then, on the occasion of Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary, his followers would assemble at the statue to celebrate the day.

However, the statue was found damaged and lying on the ground December 10 morning. Condemning this act as an affront to their leader, local people have been protesting it, organising a ‘prajameli’. They demand immediate arrest of the persons involved in this mindless act.

Meanwhile, the police are learnt to have assured the agitating people that they along with a scientific team will visit the spot Monday and investigate into the case.
