Baripada: In the wake of the debacle in the last panchayat elections in Mayurbhanj, the ruling BJD has started making serious efforts to regain its lost base following post-poll reviews.
The party has already overhauled its youth organisation and the district committee. Now, its focus is to rejuvenate the women’s organisation at the grassroots. Besides, to make the youth organisation more agile and active, the party has decided to appoint two executive presidents for the district.
Biju Janata Dal president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced names of district unit president and executive president for the women’s wing Friday. Accordingly, Binapani Sahu was named Mayurbhnaj-1 district unit president and Sabita Behera executive president. For Mayurbhnaj-2 district unit, Mamata Mohant was nominated as president and Bharati Hembram as executive president.
Jyotirmayee Kabat, who used to be president of the district women’s wing, was made general secretary of the state BJD.
Earlier, the women’s organisation in the district was not so active. Now, the women leaders have been asked to connect with women Self Help Groups at the grassroots level.
On the other hand, following a recommendation of the State Youth BJD president Amaresh Patra, Bhanuprakash Behera, a youth leader of Udala, was nominated as vice president of the district unit of BJD so as to galvanise the youth organisation into action mode.
However, nomination of Bhanuprakash has stoked discontent among some youth leaders in the party. Airing their unhappiness, Tushar Kumar Nayak, the students’ union president of North Odisha University and student leader Samanta Sekhar Pal quit their posts Sunday.
However, the two youth leaders promised to work for the BJD. Some other youth leaders are also said to be unhappy over new nominations in the youth wing.
Meanwhile, the state youth BJD has also announced presidents for 15 blocks. Another students’ leader Abhay Singh said, “The party has entrusted all with responsibility, but who will accept it or reject it depends on them.”
