BJD seeks disqualification of five MLAs

Bhubaneswar: Ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Saturday approached Assembly Speaker PK Amat seeking disqualification of five of its legislators from the House on the grounds of anti-defection law.

Government Chief Whip Amar Prasad Satpathy met the Speaker at his office late Saturday evening requesting disqualification of membership of five BJD MLAs—Trinath Gomango (Gunupur), Debaraj Mohanty (Aska), Purna Chandra Nayak (Daspalla), Basanti Mallik (Mohana) and Sukanta Nayak (Nilagiri)—who recently resigned from the party without any prior notice after denial of tickets to contest the upcoming Assembly election.

Satpathy requested the Speaker to disqualify these members on the grounds of anti-defection law. Notably, except for Trinath Gomango, other four have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
