BJD to back Birla as LS Speaker

New Delhi: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Tuesday stated that the party would support the Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Kota Om Birla for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.
According to party MPs, a decision in this regard has been taken in the BJD parliamentary party meeting held at its office in Parliament here.
While talking to media, BJD parliamentary party leader in the Lower House, Pinaki Mishra said we have signed the form for sponsoring the name of Om Birla as Lok Sabha Speaker.
“The nominee for the Speaker is bound to be elected unanimously. They had requested that there would be only one name that is going to come up, so, it should be elected unanimously as the position of the Speaker should be neutral and is beyond party lines. Since they had appealed to us also. We have decided that we will accept their appeal and today we have signed the form for sponsoring the name of Om Birla as Lok Sabha Speaker,” said Pinaki Mishra. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated Om Birla for the post the Lok Sabha Speaker. The election for the post of the Lok Sabha Speaker will be held Wednesday.
Replying to a question about speculation doing the rounds that the BJD will get the Deputy Speaker’s post, Mishra said, “We have not received any such concrete proposal from the ruling party or the government. Let the Speaker’s election be completed.”
If the BJD gets such a proposal from the BJP, the party president will take a decision on the matter, he added.
