BJP stakes claim to form next government in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The BJP in Odisha Tuesday staked its claim to form the next government in the state.

The BJP legislature party which met here under the supervision of two central observers- Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Bhupendra Yadav, unanimously elected four-time MLA from Keonjhar (ST) assembly seat Mohan Charan Majhi as its leader and the Chief Minister.

The legislature party also named six-time MLA from Patnagarh Assembly K V Singhdeo and first-timer MLA from Nimapara Pravati Parida as the two Deputy Chief Ministers.

Rajnath announced the names of Mohan Charan Majhi as Chief Minister and the two Deputy Chief Ministers soon after the legislature party meeting.

The BJP team led by Rajnath Singh later met Governor Raghubar Das at Raj Bhavan and staked claim to form the next government in the state.

Chief Minister designate Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister designate K V Singdeo and Pravati Parida also accompanied Rajnath Singh to the Raj Bhavan.

Other leaders also who accompanied the team to the Raj Bhavan were Bhupendra Yadav, Vijaya Pal Singh Tomar(party in charge of Odisha), Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Ashwini Vaishnaw, BJP National Vice President Baijayant Panda, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal and BJP General Secretary Sunil Bansal.

The Governor welcomed the Chief Minister designate Mohan Charan Majhi and felicitated him with a silver filigree replica of Sun temple wheel. He also felicitated other BJP team members.

The swearing-in ceremony of the BJP government will be held at Janata Maidan here June 12 which will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several central BJP leaders besides the Chief Ministers of at least seven BJP-ruled states, party sources said.

The BJP had won 78 of the total 147 Assembly seats in the 2024 election in Odisha.
