Blast heard in Sri Lankan town near Colombo, investigations on

At the security council meeting held last night it was decided that search operations to crackdown on extremist terrorism must continue until the threat is completely eliminated.

Colombo: Security personnel were put on high alert after an explosion took place Thursday on a stretch of empty land at the town of Pugoda, which is approximately 40 kilometres from here. Till the time of filing this report, there have been no casualties known.

Police spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekera said the explosion which occurred just behind the magistrate’s court is being investigated. “There was an explosion behind the magistrate’s court. We are looking into the matter,” Gunasekera stated. “However, the blast appears to be a one-off thing. It is not controlled the way it happened Sunday,” he added.

Sri Lanka was hit hard by a series of suicide bomb attacks Easter Sunday. The attacks which took place on churches and hotels have so far claimed over 350 lives and have left over 500 people injured, some of whom are still critical. The country at present is in a state of high alert.
