Blast in Deba Ray College ahead of campus polls

Bhubaneswar: As the list of valid candidates for the student union polls in the state was published Thursday, incidents of bomb hurling were reported at Deba Ray College in Nayapalli.

Sources said some unidentified miscreants carried out the attack following which the college was declared closed sine die. Police forces were deployed on the campus.

Pre-poll violence was also reported from Rajdhani College, as the college authorities have cancelled two presidential nominations. Informed, the police locked the main gate of the college.

Students of several universities and colleges from across the state filed nomination papers Wednesday for the elections to be held October 11.

Rama Devi Women’s University will see a tough fight among three candidates – Ipsita Tripathy of ABVP, Swikruti Mishra of BCJD and Yashmin Nesha – for the presidential post.

In BJB Autonomous College, where the election will be conducted for the first time in two years, there would be triangular fight among Sairajan Behera, Sonu Bhadak and Soumitri Batsal Dash.

In Rajdhani College, Bipasha Ranee Baliyarsingh, Sachet Raj Parida and Sasmita Pradhan will fight it out. But their dreams might turn sour as the college authorities declared closure of the institution since die fearing violence, Thursday.

In Kamala Nehru College, Soumyashre Priyadarshini is the only presidential candidate and will be elected president unopposed October 11.

The oath-taking ceremony of the winners will be held October 12.
