Boat capsizes in reservoir; 1 feared dead, another rescued

Malkangiri: A man was feared drowned while another was rescued after a boat capsized Tuesday in Satiguda reservoir, three km away from here.

The missing person was identified as Purushottam Majhi of Champakhari village, adjacent to the reservoir while Tinga of the same village was rescued.

According to reports, the two had gone to catch fish in the reservoir when their boat capsized due to heavy rain and thunderstorm. The villagers managed to rescue Tinga and rushed him to the district headquarters hospital while Majhi couldn’t be traced.

On being alerted, Malkangiri fire brigade reached the spot and launched an operation to trace Majhi. The operation was on till filing of this report.

Since the reservoir is close to the village, many youths go for fishing on country boats to eke out a living. However, none of them use life jackets.

Meanwhile, the locals said the administration should make the use of life jacket and fitness of the boats mandatory for the safety of the fishermen.
