London: U2 frontman Bono has become the world’s richest pop star after raking in nearly 1 billion pound from his Facebook shares. The 55-year-old singer saw a fantastic return in his social network investment and has now overtaken Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney as the world’s richest pop star, who is estimated at 730 million pounds, reported Daily Mirror.
The “Beautiful Day” hitmaker bought a 2.3 per cent share in the social media network for 56 million pounds in 2009 with the investment group that he co-founded, Elevation Partners. Today the share is worth 940 million pounds, making Bono’s venture earn him more in the last six years than the whole of his incredible music career, including almost 40 years as a singer in U2.
Since its formation in Dublin in 1976, the band has become one of the world’s biggest rock acts. The news comes after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced last week that over one billion people used the website in a single day, which means one in seven people on Earth. IANS
