Boy critical after iron rod pierces his chest

Keonjhar: A minor boy suffered critical injuries after an iron rod pierced his chest while he was playing near his house at Dimbo under Town police limits here in the district Sunday.

The victim has been identified as Chandan Mahakud, 11, elder son of Nanda Kishore Mahakud, an autorickshaw driver. The boy was admitted to a hospital nearby. After preliminary treatment, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack as his condition worsened.

The incident occurred when Chandan was playing with a 5-ft-long iron rod near his house at  5pm, Sunday.

According to reports, the boy accidentally fell on the iron rod that pierced his chest. His parents came out of the house and found their son suffering from excruciating pain. They immediately rushed him to the DHH in a critical condition. He was later referred to the SCB.

“Chandan was playing with his younger brother who was holding an iron rod near the house. We came to know about the mishap when our younger son informed us,” said Chandan’s mother.

“Doctors at Keonjhar DHH suggested that we shift our son to Cuttack citing lack of equipment at the hospital. The doctors at SCB Hospital promised to remove the iron rod,’’ she added.

Notably, Nanda Kishore hails from Baiganpal under Ghatagaon police limits in Keonjhar district. He along with his family has been residing at Dimbo.

Last year, a similar kind of incident was reported from Dhangadadiha near Ghatagaon in the district where a sharp bough of a tree pierced into in the neck of a minor boy after he fell off a blackberry tree. It was removed from his neck following a successful surgery by a team of doctors at SCB.
