Bhubaneswar: Ferran Corominas (51st) and Brandon Fernandes (64th) struck one goal each in the second half as FC Goa defeated Chennaiyin FC 2-1 to lift their maiden Super Cup title here at the Kalinga Stadium, Saturday. It was also the Goan side’s first silverware in five seasons.
Goa started off the game with their scrupulous flair, but it was Chennaiyin who got sent five attempts on target within a 13-minute period after the first quarter of an hour.
Defender Mailson Alves remained on top with his heading skills on both ends of the pitch. The Brazilian trio of Alves, Raphael Augusto and Eli Sabia, all had their sniffs on goal and Goa had a lucky escape each time.
The 2018 ISL champions should have taken the lead in the 28th minute but a Dhanapal Ganesh header was brilliantly put off target Goan goalie Mohammad Nawaz.
However, the ISL finalists eventually delivered six minutes into the second half when Chennaiyin midfielder Anirudh Thapa lost the ball to Corominas and that led to the opener.
Hugo Boumous took the shot which Chennaiyin custodian Karanjit Singh dived low to only parry it towards Corominas and the former Espanyol man easily guided the ball home to put Goa in the lead.
Chennaiyin clawed back into the game through Rafael Augusto in the three minutes later when the Brazilian’s shot got deflected into the back of the net.
But their joy was shortlived when Corominas picked out Brandon’s run with an excellent pass and the Goan poked the ball past Mailson Alves and Karanjit to make it regain the lead for FC Goa and the title.
