BHUBANESWAR: Dating apps are largely looked down upon in our society. It is usually seen as a medium for hook ups, casual relationships and spicing up one’s love life. An important part of dating is communicating. We communicate by sharing our thoughts, ideas and feelings. Apps like Tinder, Hinge, Okcupid, Bumble, Happn, Aisle seem to provide that mode of communication according to the user’s convenience. On Valentine’s Day eve, Orissa Post interacted with city youngsters to delve deeper into the subject.
Ankita Banerjee said, “The platform is certainly not bad. It is convenient for people who find it difficult to talk to others spontaneously. Online dating sites give us a chance to break the ice and create a comfortable scenario with our crush. However, problem lies with the mentality of a certain group of people who use it for wrong reasons. See, in the world of dating, nothing is right or wrong in absolute terms as long as whatever is happening is mutual and has the consent of both the parties.”
Jyotsna Priyadarshini said, “I don’t trust people easily. Hence, I personally feel that dating apps are no good for me. I don’t see it as serendipity. These apps, I feel, makes us come across fake personalities. Even if I am ever hooked up to someone online, I can’t imagine staying with him for long.”
Reshmi Pathak said, “It is a risk worth taking. I can make new contacts through it. It’s like dating in the dark. We get to know varied personalities. I like dating online as it is full of surprises.”
Sanchita Dwivedi said “Personally speaking, I think dating apps are a very shallow way of choosing someone. The choice is purely made on the basis of vague judgements. I haven’t tried any dating apps till date but one never knows what the future holds.”
Satyabrat Mohapatra said, “Online dating portals may get you a date for Valentine’s Day. However, such relationships do not turn out to be successful in the long run. Getting to know someone over social media may not yield best results as you don’t get to know a person naturally.”
Suchishraba Sarangi said, “It totally depends on the wants of a person. If they want a casual relationship, they can certainly give it a try. However, if one seeks a serious relationship, there’s a low chance of success through dating apps.”
