Brown sugar seized, 3 including woman held

Bhubaneswar: At least three drug peddlers including a woman were arrested Friday morning by excise sleuths in the twin cities of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar and brown sugar worth lakhs was seized from them.

According to reports, the flying squad comprising of Excise Intelligence & Enforcement Bureau carried out simultaneous raids in Khurda and Cuttack and nabbed two persons for smuggling drugs.

The two arrested have been identified as Abhaya Charan Sahoo (45) of Willkisan Nagar (Nuagaon) under Khurda Town police limits and Santosh Kumar Pandaba (33) of Gandhipalli under Chauliaganj police limits in Cuttack.

Police seized 100 grams of brown sugar, 800 kilograms of ganja and 150 liters of illicit liquor from both the places apart from seizing a scooter and Rs 50,000 cash from the accused persons.

Meanwhile, a woman was arrested from Haladipadia area under Laxmisagar police limits and brown sugar worth Rs 20 lakh was seized from her possession.

The raids were carried out following the direction of Excise Commissioner Debendra Mohapatra. Cases against them have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and they will be forwarded to the court soon, said the police.
