Basta: Police Wednesday seized 105 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 10 lakh from Sadanand Square in Balasore district and arrested a person in this connection. The accused was identified as Sheikh Alamuddin Banguru, 27.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team Thursday conducted raids at Sadanand Square here. During search, police seized around 105 grams of brown sugar from the possession of the accused and arrested him.
The seized contraband is estimated to be worth around Rs 10 lakhs, the police said. A case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the IPC. The accused was forwarded to court, the police added.
Earlier, the excise department had seized 155 gm of brown sugar worth of 15 lakh from the village December 22. Police said brown sugar is imported from Bangladesh and distributed by drug smugglers at various places in Balasore district.
However the police failed to arrest the main accused of brown sugar smuggling.
