Balasore: In a major drug haul, brown sugar worth around Rs 2.5 crore was seized from Jaleswar area in Balasore district late Monday night. Three persons including two women were arrested in this connection.
The arrested persons have been identified as Mukhtar Ali Khan, his wife and mother-in-law.
According to a source, Jaleswar police were tipped off that the peddlers were negotiating with parties to sell off the contraband at a hotel. Swinging into action, the police and excise department officials conducted raid on Hotel Diamond located at Jaleswar station bazaar and seized 2.4kg of brown sugar.
“The three drug peddlers will be forwarded to court,” said the police.
Notably, Jaleswar town has recently become the trade centre of narcotic items. The Covid-19 time has seen a rise in the cases. The town’s proximity to West Bengal has been blamed for this.
