Brown sugar worth Rs 20 lakh seized in Cuttack, 2 engineering students held

Cuttack: A team of Central Excise Intelligence Department Saturday seized a brown sugar consignment weighing 222 gram, estimated to be worth more than Rs 20 lakh, from a car at Ling road square in Cuttack.

Three persons, including two engineering students, have been arrested in this connection.

The arrestees have been identified as Antaryami Baliarsing (30) of Gadishagodar in Puri district, Subrat Ransingh (26) of Sunakhala area and Babuna Nayak (26) of Niali in Cuttack district.

While one of them is a pharmacist at a private hospital, two are engineering students.

Deputy Commissioner Ramchandra Palta was tipped off about the consignment of brown sugar being smuggled from Khurda to Paradip.

Accordingly, a team led by Jagdish Chandra Samal waited for the gang at Link road square and nearby areas from 4 am.

The officers stopped the car as soon as it entered the locality at 5 pm.

After inspection, two packets containing brown sugar were recovered from under the rear seat.

After interrogation, the accused confessed to their crime.

The men, all hailing from Paradip, admitted that they have been carrying out brown sugar business in Paradip. They also said that they procured the packets of the contraband from a dealer in Khurda.

Samal said further investigation is on to trace the businessman in Khurda, the place from where he is procuring brown sugar and other persons involved in the case.
