Brown sugar worth Rs 27 lakh seized

Bhubaneswar: In a major crackdown against drug peddling, a joint team of Khandagiri police and Special Squad Tuesday morning conducted a raid and seized 300 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 25 lakh from a drug-peddler.

The accused has been identified as Santosh Panda – a resident of Balanga village under Nimapada tehsils in Puri district.

Brown sugar weighing 300 grams, Rs 2.14 lakh in cash, five mobile phones and a motorcycle has been seized from his possession. More than five cases are pending against him in various police stations in Khurdha, the police said.

It may also be mentioned here that a team of Cuttack based Central Excise Intelligence Department Tuesday intercepted another drug peddler and seized 20 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 2 lakh from his possession at KIIT College square near Patia in Bhubaneswar.

The accused has been identified as Ranjit Sahu, a resident of Mancheswar police limits in the city.

According to officials, acting on a tip-off, the officials arrested the drug peddler at KIIT square. Upon search, police recovered brown sugar weighing 20 grams, whose market value stands at Rs 2 lakh.
