Cannabis worth Rs 1 crore seized in Gajapati

R Udayagiri: In a major crackdown Sunday evening, the Adava police seized over 20 quintals of Ganja (cannabis) from a granite-laden truck near Mandrabaju under R Udayagiri block in Gajapati district.

Police arrested two persons in this connection. The two have been identified as Ravi Singh and Raju Singh from Aligarh city in Uttar Pradesh.

“A truck (bearing registration number UP-78 DT-7006) was carrying ganja along with granite when police team intercepted the vehicle near Mandrabaju village and arrested two persons. Cannabis packed in as many as seventy large sacks was seized from the vehicle following through search,” R Udayagiri SDPO Dilip Kumar Nayak said.

The contraband item was being smuggled from R. Udayagiri block in Gajapati district to Uttar Pradesh. Estimated value of the seized ganja will be around Rs 1 crore in the open market, the SDPO added.

It is pertinent to mention here that Odisha Police have seized ganja worth over Rs 2.5 crore in two different districts in two days.

Chitrakonda police earlier seized huge quantity of ganja late Saturday night while being smuggled from Malkangiri district to Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh in a pickup van. Police arrested driver of the vehicle for his alleged involvement in smuggling of the contraband item.
