Bhubaneswar: In response to health secretary Pramod Meherda’s direction for an inquiry into the incident wherein a woman Friday delivered a baby on Capital Hospital footpath, hospital director Ashok Kumar Pattanayak has submitted his report denying any negligence on part of the hospital.
He has mentioned it in the report that the allegations against the hospital are baseless. Neither any doctors nor the hospital is responsible in the incident anyway, it was learnt.
It may be mentioned that Pana Murmu, a resident of Salia Sahi, complained of labour pain Friday and was taken to Capital Hospital by her family members. The on duty doctor at Obstetrics and Gynecology department conducted some tests and took her to the labour room. Later, instead of facilitating her delivery, the family members were asked to take her to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack saying her condition was critical. Thereafter, the staff took Pana out of the labour room, not paying any heed to the requests of the family members.
Since they did not have enough money to take her to Cuttack, the family members were waiting on the footpath trying to figure out their next step. Pana, meanwhile, complained of severe pain and eventually delivered a baby boy on the footpath moments later.
This irked the people who created a ruckus on the hospital premises. The statements of two doctors were recorded that night.
According to their statements, the woman was not neglected. Her husband brought her to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw at about 7:00pm. He was asked to get an admission ticket from the counter. But he took his wife back home instead. Later, the family members brought her to the hospital after she delivered on the footpath.
The mother and the child were attended to immediately, the doctors had said.
BJP women’s wing, meanwhile, has raised questions about the functioning of ‘Mo Sarkar’ programme of the government in view of the incident that took place in the heart of the state.
