Kendrapada: A giant carcass of a rare dolphin was spotted at Bhedisahi village under Pattamundai police limits in Kendrapara district Sunday night.
Spotting the carcass of the rare aquatic mammal, the villagers were taken aback and immediately passed the information to the forest department. As the news spread, villagers from nearby areas thronged the spot to take a look at the mammal.
Later, forest officials reached the village and recovered the carcass. They took it to Central Nursery at Sansarphala.
According to them, the Gangetic dolphin had strayed from Mahanadi delta to Gobari river. It is suspected that the mammal got caught in the fishing nets of Bhedisahi village’s fishermen.
The fisherman allegedly took it out of water and it was when the mammal died due to remaining out of water for a long time, the fishermen threw away the carcass.
Rajnagar additional veterinary officer Debi Prasad Kunda conducted post mortem of the carcass, it was learnt.
