Cuttack: The carcass of an elephant was spotted at gate no-24 of Jobra barrage in Cuttack Sunday morning.
Forest department officials are on the spot to recover the carcass. Personnel from Jagatpur and Malgodown police stations are also on the scene to manage the crowd.
Whether it is the carcass of the jumbo which was trapped in the current of Mahanadi river at Mundali barrage September 24 or not is yet to be confirmed by the forest department.
Locals are of the opinion that the carcass is of the same elephant for which Operation Gajaraj was launched.
Notably, Operation Gajaraj was launched September 24 to rescue an elephant trapped in the current of Mahanadi River at Mundali barrage. However, the operation turned tragic as an ODRAF boat capsized, killing journalist Arindam Das and an ODRAF jawan identified as Sitaram Murmu.
The elephant was spotted standing in the water till September 24 late night. The next day morning, the animal was not there. The forest department could not confirm whether the elephant was washed away or managed to reach the riverbank.
