Cuttack: Cattle smugglers beat up three police officers at Gopinathpur Sasan square under Tigiria police limits in Cuttack district, a source said Saturday.

According to the source, three police officers — Inspector-in-charge (IIC), Sub- Inspector (SI), and Assistant Sub- Inspector (ASI) of Tigiria Police Station — were injured by the assailants Friday night.

All the officers were taken to Tigiria Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment.

Acting on a tip-off about cattle smuggling, the police team was patrolling at Gopinathpur Square Friday. Subsequently, the team stopped a truck carrying cattle, but the persons sitting inside the truck pounced on the police team, the source said.

The alleged cattle smugglers left the spot after attacking the police officers.

Later, Athagarh Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) launched a raid in the region. At the time of filing this report, police had detained two people in this connection.

The truck was on its way to Kolkata, a source in the police said.

Police have launched a detailed probe into this matter.
