Salipur: A married woman and a youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging inside a locked room after they were caught red-handed in a compromising position by the husband of the woman who locked them from outside and alerted co-villagers. The incident happened Friday night.
The two took the extreme step as they feared the public stigma, it was alleged. Villagers opened the door only to find the two hanging from the ceiling fan. After getting information, police reached the village and launched a probe. The bodies were seized and sent for autopsy.
The incident was reported from Khanda village near Kendupatna under Salipur police limits of Cuttack district.
According to villagers, the deceased youth, Bhanja Kishore Patra, a distant brother-in-law of the deceased woman were in an illicit affair. The woman’s husband, Khirod Kumar Behera, spotted the duo in a compromising position inside the room Friday night. He bolted the door from outside and alerted other villagers.
However, the family of Bhanja accused Khirod and his family of killing him.
“The woman had called my son into the room. After spotting them in a room, her husband and family members locked them from outside and discussed the matter with family,” said Bhanja’s mother Gita Patra.
She accused the woman’s husband and three of his family members of killing the two and then hanging them to give it a colour of suicide.
“I was sleeping outside and my wife was in the room last night. I caught her with the youth when I entered the room to fetch a torch light to go outside to answer the nature’s call. Then, I locked them in the room from outside to let others know about their illicit affair,” said Khirod.
