CB issues advisory on curbing cybercrimes

Cuttack: Perturbed at a surge in cases of cybercrimes, mostly on social media, the state Crime Branch (CB) has issued a set of advisories to sensitise the netizens about the online frauds.

To begin with, the CB has appealed to the Internet users, especially women, to avoid accepting friend requests from unknown persons on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “In case one accepts a friend request and later finds something unusual or fishy, then s/he may block the account,” read one of the points of the advisory.

Besides, in a bid to avoid hacking or misuse of social media accounts, the netizens were advised to ensure changing passwords of their accounts on a regular basis. “In case of instances of cyberbullying, victims may log on to www.cybercrime.gov.in and get their complaints registered,” the advisory said.

The CB has also urged the people to keep tabs on their children. For more information on the dos and don’ts, netizens may follow the Twitter account—@cyberDost, the CB advised.

Cases relating to cybercrime have shot up in the recent past with conmen befriending people, especially women, on social media after creating bogus accounts. “Due to easy access to Internet on one hand and lack of awareness on the other, gullible women fall victims to conmen, who cheat them on false promises,” a senior technology analyst with a reputed MNC pointed out, adding that the CB’s effort to sensitise the netizens would go a long way in curtailing the cases of cybercrimes.
