Chhatrapur: Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange directed installation of CCTV cameras at schools and colleges situated on the side of national highways in the district at a Road Safety Committee meeting Thursday.
He also directed to identify black spots on various stretches where accidents are frequent and take steps accordingly to minimise mishaps.
Expressing his concern over the unnecessary humps on various roads in Hinjili, he wanted the roads free from all unnecessary hurdles and directed the officials concerned to collect fines and take legal action against traffic violators.
On this occasion, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Rai said the 38-km Hinjili-Gajalbadi stretch touching Shergarh, Badgarh and Sorada is accident prone. He expressed his dissatisfaction as the engineer concerned is yet to take any steps at accident prone areas, like putting up signage and traffic signals even though he had been directed to do so at the previous meeting.
Expressing his anger over the absence of the project director of the National Highway Authority of India, Bhubaneswar division, who had remained absent at two consecutive Road Safety Committee meetings, Collector Kulange said a warrant would be issued against the PD for not attending the meeting.
In 80 accidents occurred in January 2019, 49 people died; 148 driving licences were cancelled for reckless driving and not wearing helmets and fines were collected from 8,929 traffic violators.
Among others, ASP Mayadhar Sethy, RTO Sanjay Biswal, DEO Sanatan Panda, Visakhapatnam NHAI PD Prashant Mishra, additional health officer Dr B Pattanayak, Berhampur traffic police station IIC Sumant Kishan, members Anil Padhy and Basant Maharana and others attended the meeting.
