Kamakhyanagar: A newborn baby girl, her mother and her grandmother had a narrow escape as the ceiling fan of their ward in Kamakhyanagar sub divisional hospital in Dhenkanal district came off the roof and fell onto the ground, just near their bed early Monday morning.

According to sources, Subhasini — wife of Babaji Chandra Baral of Batagaon village under Kankadahad block — had delivered a baby girl at the hospital Saturday and was staying in cabin 1 of the hospital.

At about 1am Monday, the fan got detached from the ceiling and crashed next to their bed.

While Subhasini and her newborn were sleeping on the bed, her mother-in-law Chaitrakala Baral was sleeping on the ground. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident.

Chief medical officer, Kamakhyanagar sub divisional hospital, Dr Ratnakar Samal admitted the incident and said, “The pipe of the fan snapped leading to the mishap. Soon the fan will be repaired.”

However, some patients alleged, “Incidents of fans coming off roof in this hospital are occurring at regular intervals. In most of the cases, patients or their attendants suffer injuries. Yet, the hospital authorities are not serious about getting the fans checked”.

They further advised that a thorough repairing should be carried out at least before summer since the fans are hardly used before it and they are used round the clock through the season.
