Central panel visits two sites for IIM

Bhubaneswar, Jan 14: A Central committee Wednesday visited two sites proposed by the state government for establishment of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Orissa.
The committee led by additional secretary (higher education) in the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) Amarjeet Sinha and accompanied by Kolkata IIM director Saibal Chattopadhyay, officials from employment, technical education and training (ETE&T) and industrial infrastructure development corporation (Idco) and Khurda collector Niranjan Sethi visited the sites to select a permanent campus and a temporary campus.
The team visited one near international institute of information technology (IIIT) at Gothapatna and the other near new Indian institute of technology (IIT) campus at Argul. Both the sites are considered to be on the outskirts of the capital city. “We have visited the proposed sites and the temporary campus. Soon, we will submit our report to the Centre,” said Sinha.
‘‘The team is happy that the state has chosen IIIT campus as temporary campus for the IIM from the next academic session,’’ said ETE&T additional secretary PK Das.
“The committee will communicate about the selected site within seven days and the classes will start at IIIT in July,” he added. According to ETET sources, the committee has been considering the Gothapatna site which is better than the Argul site which has 114-acre land. The shape of the Argul site is not very favourable as it is 1.5-km long and 400-metre in width.
The MHRD had asked the state in July last to select two sites with good rail, road and air connectivity to set up an IIM.
