Bansal’s name was among three others sent by the government to Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for appointment as DGP in Odisha. The other two police officers were 1988-batch Manoj Chhabra who is presently posted as head of State Armed Police and 1986-batch IPS officer Pradip Kapoor who is now posted as Scientific Advisor of the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).

Bansal had gone on a Central deputation in 1994 and since then had held many vital positions in the Intelligence Bureau, prior to moving to which, he held key posts in Dhenkanal, Angul and Mayurbhanj.
