Children at risk as school walls on verge of collapse in Koraput district

Damanjodi: The primary school building in Kumbharguda village under Charangul panchayat in Semiliguda block of Koraput district is in shambles, a source said Thursday.

According to the source, the classrooms’ concrete walls and roofs are on the verge of collapse.

The source further informed that the school lacks basic facilities meant for children. The students don’t have access to toilets, clean drinking water or a playground.

Children from Class-I to Class-V study in this government school. There are three teachers to teach 25 students. The students are forced to study under trees as a stop-gap arrangement. However, when it rains, even this arrangement goes out of option. At that time, children could be seen sitting in the verandahs of people’s houses to attend classes, the source added.

The villagers had complained to the block administration several times to reconstruct the school building but to no avail.  Besides, a nearby school in Gumalguda village was shut down and merged with Kumbharguda school.
