CISF officer killed in mishap; 1 held

Bhubaneswar: The Airport police here Sunday arrested a man for allegedly mowing down a CISF officer here while driving under the influence of alcohol Saturday evening. According to police, Niranjan Pradhan, the CISF officer posted at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA), succumbed to injuries he sustained during a head-on collision between his bike and a four-wheeler near Kargil Basti Saturday night. Zone II ACP Krushna Chandra Palei said the accused has been identified as Sovan Mohapatra, 34, a native of Nayagarh district who works as a painter here. A drunken Sovan was driving rashly when he knocked Pradhan to death on Pokhariput-Palaspali stretch.

The incident occurred around 8:30pm when Niranjan was coming to duty on his motorcycle. Niranjan, who sustained serious head injuries, was rushed to Sunshine Hospitals by locals, where he succumbed to the injuries in the wee hours of Saturday. Sovan, who admitted to his fault, was arrested and a breath analyser test showed 239 – higher than the permissible limit of 50, said the police adding that the four-wheeler has been seized. Airport police have booked him under relevant Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and BNS, before producing him before a local court Sunday.
