Bhubaneswar: A Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s court Sunday granted the Commissionerate Police three-day custody of six persons, who were arrested October 16 for running a fake call centre out of a rented flat in Sundarpada area, to facilitate further investigation into the case. DCP Pinak Mishra said the Commissionerate Police will obtain the custody of the six accused, all from Kolkata, from the Jharpada special prisons where they are currently lodged, Monday. “We will have them in our custody till Wednesday,” Mishra said. Shedding light on the progress of the probe, the DCP said a three-member team from Cyber police station left for Kolkata Saturday to check their criminal antecedents, if any, with the help of the local police. “Another team at the Cyber police station is scrutinising their bank transactions, with help from technical experts, to find out their possible money laundering activities, and terror links,” Mishra added.
On Thursday Mishra had claimed that the gang of six generated an average monthly income of Rs 1 lakh from their con operation. He said the revelation came during the interrogation of the mastermind, Haider Ali, who said the money was raised by sending fraudulent emails to clients, impersonating customer care agents and providing fake numbers to induce them into making fraudulent transactions. Mishra said the operational area of the scammers extended to far-off territories like the UK and US, apart from several states in the country.
