City docs implant stent sans major surgery

Bhubaneswar: A group of city doctors recently successfully implanted a stent in the blood vessel of a cancer patient without major surgery through a minimally invasive procedure.

The team said the 50-year-old cancer patient came to the hospital complaining of excessive bleeding from his right cheek. Investigation revealed that one of the blood vessels in the neck region not visible to the naked eye had started leaking.

“Such carotid leakages are rare and is life threatening if not treated immediately. Immediately we tried cath lab tech to assess the damage and implanted a stent around the artery to stop leakage. The surgery was done without any major incision through a small hole,” said Dr Deepak Das, Interventional Radiologist, Blue Wheel Hospital, who led the surgery.

He said that facilities like cath lab has made it possible to undertake surgery without cuts, blood loss and threats to life.

“We are lucky to have state of the art technology. It ensures that surgeries are minor, involves lesser blood loss, lesser cuts and helps in fast recovery. Due to non-invasive technology patients are discharged the same day,” he added.

Speaking about the utility of advanced technology in surgeries, another radiologist, Dr Sandeep Das said, “The high end procedure was done at an affordable price compared to charges in large hospitals. The technique used is non-surgical, painless with no scars. Using interventional radiology non-surgical treatment of liver cancer, varicose veins, acute stroke, uterine fibroid, leg ulcers and limb saving angioplasty is now possible.”
